How benefits in kind affect take-home pay
Most non-cash taxable benefits do not increase the cash salary paid into your bank account, but their taxable value is added for Income Tax purposes. That can push part of your income into a higher tax band or reduce your Personal Allowance at higher incomes.
You normally pay tax on the premium cost paid by your employer, although some health benefits are exempt.
The taxable car benefit is based on the car's list/P11D price multiplied by the appropriate percentage for its emissions and fuel type.
Low-interest or interest-free loans can create a taxable benefit where qualifying balances exceed £10,000. The official rate from 6 April 2026 is 3.75%.
Your real PAYE position can depend on tax code, payroll timing, optional-remuneration rules and how your employer reports the benefit.
